History and Evolution of Visa Cards

The Visa cards are financially more significant than they appear. At least, standing in the present day when it is impossible to think without electronic fund transferring.

The Beginning:

Back in September 1958, can be traced to the birth of BankAmericard, what we know as a Visa company at the present day. Initially, BankAmericard had a maximum limit of $300.

In 1960s

In the next decade in the 1960s, the BankAmericard program was extended to foreign lands. The new initiative was known by different names in the local banks abroad. For instance, the UK-issued cards under names like Barclaycard, and the neighboring French financial institutes issued Visa cards as Carte Bleue.

Back in 1968, Dee Hock, the manager of the National Bank of Commerce examined the role of the BankAmericard in the Pacific Northwest. He recognized certain issues and formed a committee of other banks and foresaw the future of the card internationally.

In 1970s

Soon, Bank of America withdrew from the BankAmericard program, which was handed over to various issuer banks. They jointly created National BankAmericard and made Hock the first CEO. In 1973, the protocol language of the electronic authorization system was introduced which was the precursor to VisaNet. In 1976, Visa was born and soon was expanded to foreign banks.

Visa has received resistance internationally. For this reason, Hock added the blue, white, and golden flags as a sign of inclusion of the international flags. In fact, the name Visa was intentionally kept because it is easily recognizable in any foreign language.

In the 2000s

Visa took the major decision of becoming a public company in October 2007. Soon Visa Canada, Visa USA, and Visa international merged as a new company following the IPO recognition. Within one month in November 2007, Visa submitted a nearly $10 billion IPO. The next year it went public. In the 2000s, Visa enables over 1.5K transactions. It became the second-largest payment organization after China Union Pay. At present over 3.9 billion Visa cards are in use globally.

Types of Visa Cards

Within the broader Visa brand name, they have multiple types of Visa cards.

Visa Debit Cards

Unlike credit cards, debit cards are provided to mostly all bankers. When the user has Visa debit cards, they can have access to their daily bank account transactions.

Debit cards are accepted for both savings and checking accounts. The cardholders can perform all the regular functions like retail purchases or any online transactions. They can do so through a bank or ATM using an allocated PIN.

Visa Credit Cards

Like the global financial protocols, Visa issues credit cards to those whom they find creditworthy. The creditworthiness is analyzed based on their credit report. Those who receive credit cards can use them at merchants and ATMs across the world. They guarantee the entire transaction is secure.

Certain benefits entitled by credit card users are cash back rewards, zero percent introductory APRs also known as AnnualPercentage Rates, and other shopping-related benefits.

Visa Prepaid Cards

Prepaid cards are different from regular debit or credit cards under the Visa brand. These cards primarily are loaded with a particular sum of money which is also the credit limit of the user.

So this in a way restricts the user from spending beyond the particular amount loaded on the card. Prepaid cards can be reloaded later.
